Knowing what species of ant is present helps to determine the nesting site, food preference, and the best method of management. In most cases, the most effective, permanent solution is to find and treat the nest; queens must be killed to properly eliminate a colony.Nonchemical methods

Trying to discourage ants from invading the home can be frustrating. Proper food storage and waste management will reduce the food that often attracts workers indoors. Clean all kitchen surfaces, vacuum daily, and rinse recyclable containers before storage. Ant trails can be temporarily disrupted with a mild solution of vinegar and water. Sticky barriers using commercially available materials, such as Tanglefoot or Stickem, or water moats containing soapy water, can be used to prevent ants from reaching plants or other items. Caulk cracks that ants are using to enter the home.Outdoors

Many ants enter homes from outside nests as they forage for food. To find their nest, follow the ants. You can encourage foraging by setting out attractive food. Ants usually take regular routes to and from their nest and the food source by establishing a chemical (pheromone) trail. The nest may be found by watching where the ants go; for some ants, such as carpenter ants, this works best at night. If the nest is discovered, it can be treated or removed (in the case of rotted wood).

Common insecticides for treating ant nests in the lawn are listed below. Be sure to select a product that is labeled for treating lawns:

permethrin as a liquid or granules carbaryl (e.g. Sevin) as a liquid or granules bifenthrin as granules cyfluthrin as granules acephate as a liquid

(Note: Liquids work best if they are drenched in. You may need 1/2 gallon or more of mixed material to treat large nests.)

Retreatment of nest sites may be necessary if above ground activity resumes after the initial application.

In cases where the nest is not found, ants can be kept out of the house by applying an insecticide barrier around the exterior of the building. Careful observation may reveal the ants are entering only through one area of the house; this would allow a spot treatment of that area. If it is not clear where the ants are entering, then treat a 2 4 foot wide area around the entire building. This control method is temporary and retreatments may be necessary.

Common insecticides for treating the building exteriors are listed below. Be sure to select a product that is labeled for treating the perimeter of buildings’ exteriors:

permethrin as a liquid or granules bifenthrin as a liquid carbaryl as a liquid or granules cyfluthrin as granules deltamethrin as a dustOutdoor nests can be very difficult to eliminate without chemicals. Using water to flood nests is usually not effective. Use of gasoline also is ineffective and dangerous and causes environmental pollution. Repeated drenchings of a nest with an insecticidal soap solution is sometimes effective in forcing an ant colony to relocate. There is no scientific evidence that spearmint gum, red pepper, orange peels, or various herbs repel ants effectively. Remember you must kill or relocate the queen to manage an ant colony.Indoors

When possible, find the nest and treat it with an insecticide. When the nest is concealed, e.g. behind a wall, it may be necessary to drill small holes, about 1/8 inch diameter, and apply an insecticidal dust (be sure it is labeled for indoor use). These products may come in ready to use applicators. If not, use a plastic squeeze bottle or some type of flexible plastic container with a tube tip to apply the insecticide. Fill the container about 1/3 or 1/2 full and squeeze a small amount of dust into the desired location (note: applying too much material will cause ants to avoid contact with the dust). Return the unused insecticide back to its original container and thoroughly clean the applicator.

Common dusts for treating voids/cracks/crevices are listed below. Be sure to select a product that is labeled for indoor household use.

deltamethrin permethrin

Another tactic is the use of baits. Workers feed on the bait and take it back to the nest where they share it with the rest of the colony. An advantage of baits is that they are is delivered into inaccessible areas that insecticide sprays cannot reach. However, baits act slowly and may take several weeks to several months to eradicate a colony. Ant baits sold in stores for public use are generally labeled for many common household ants, although ants will not be equally attracted to all baits. It is important to identify what ant species is present so the appropriate bait can be used.

Common insecticides in ant baits are listed below. Be sure to select a product that is labeled for ants.

abamectin fipronil sulfluramid (may be listed as N-ethyl Perfluorooctanesulfonamide) disodium octaborate orthoboric acid propoxur (e.g. Baygon)

Spraying foraging ants is only temporary and has little impact on the nest. Spraying may be useful for seasonal ant problems, when ants enter from outside nests.

Common aerosol ready to use insecticides for treating ants found indoors are listed below. Be sure to select a product that is labeled for indoor household use.

permethrin as an aerosol or a liquid bifenthrin as liquid cyfluthrin as a liquid cypermethrin as an aerosol deltamethrin as a liquid tralomethrin as an aerosol or a liquid

People all over the internet are voicing their concern that permethrin scabies treatments do not work, not only that but people are skeptical of putting pesticides and insecticides on their lawn nevermind their own skin. The medical community suggests that permethrin creams are not good for pregnant women and children. So what would make these creams good for anyone? That is the question.

Scabies is a highly infectious and contagious skin condition which is caused by eight legged mites called Sarcoptes Scabei, the mites live in burrows on your skin which cause intense itching and loss of sleep. Scabies can spread at an alarming rate within households or places in which people live in close proximities, places such as shelters, nursing homes and schools. It is highly important to diagnose and treat scabies as quickly as you can, because the longer you have them the more they spread and the harder they become to treat. It is said if you have scabies for 1 year it will take 2 years to get rid of them. Make sure you treat everyone you have come into close contact with and any family members, this is a very important step in breaking the mites cycle and preventing reinfection.

Scabies symptoms include intense itching which is worse during the evening hours and at night, patches of skin like rashes that may appear on both sides of the body, and burrow like track marks that resemble stretch marks. You may also see blister like sores which are caused by scratching or dry skin associated with scabies. Scabies can be found anywhere on the body including between fingers and feet, armpits, around genitals, eblows, and on the soles of the feet.

The scabies mites are almost impossible to see with the visible eye, the female scabies mite burrows beneath the skin and creates tiny tunnels to lay her eggs. The eggs then take about 21 days to grow into newly hatched mites which surface to the skin and create more babies.

Scabies insecticide treatments in most cases will cure a scabies infection, but you should be aware that there have been lots of reports about the safety of these kinds of drugs. Permethrin cream is the most common form of insecticide based scabies treatments that are available over the counter at nearly any pharmacy. The permethrin treatments have alot of bad side effects such as neurological disorders and intense itching, permethrin creams come from a chemical known as Pyrethrum, many people label this chemical as a carcinogen. Another chemical used to treat scabies that has been banned in over 40 countries due to association with seizures, leukemia and lymphoma is called Lindane. The third most popular scabies treatment is called Malathion which is known to cause nausea, headaches and has been associated with people having breating difficulties after treatments for years.

These are just some reasons why if you have contracted scabies you should be seeking natural alternatives to cure them, do you really want to risk putting pesticides and insecticides on your body and ending up with a worse illness or condition? It is only smart to look into finding a natural cure that is not going to cause you further damage and heartache.

Stink bugs do not like a very hot areas and places they tend to move and relocate if the heat and temperatures become too much and are unbearable. Stink bugs tend to hibernate in buildings if it is too cold and they will tend to look for buildings that will provide them with warmth. Likewise they can remain active throughout the whole year if the winter is not too harsh and it is not too cold but if it gets to cold they will also look for warmth indoors. There are certain species of stink bugs that are predators of other pests and insects and this is normally the case if local populations of food are prevalent but they will also resort of fruits, plants and plants if there is no other food which is available. A few stink bugs around your garden is ok but they can be problematic if they are eating your produce and your crops, fruits and vegetables. Stink bugs are not very good eaters and they are not efficient when they eat, they tend to move from fruit to fruit or from vegetable to vegetable ruing several in one day. They are also attracted to light and they will find their ways in to your home during long summer nights when verandah, porch and decks lights are on and once doors are being constantly opened and closed they will make their way into your home. Places like houses, barns, basements and so forth provide much needed warmth and shelter from things such as rain, cold and other harsh elements that can greatly affect stink bugs. Stink bugs will go to great lengthens to get out of cold and harsh weather and they will work very hard to get in to your house. They will work their way in and around window and door frames, they will crawl up to the attic or space vent, under roofs and under roof shingles or they will try to sneak into the garage or basement. Wherever there is an opening and it is sealed or an insecticide or pesticide has not been sprayed they will try to make a way into there. Once they are inside your home they go into hibernation mode and they will go into state of suspended animation and wait for winter to pass. This is not always the case though and once inside your home they may be attracted to the warmth and they may not go into hibernation mode and they will not go into a state of animation. They will become and remain very active through out winter.Try not to touch them, disturb them, mishandle them or threat or annoy them in way because they will produce or release a very nasty smell and there are some species that inflict a very small but pin like bite. If you have a garden and if stink bugs are damaging your garden and you want to stop the damage being done to your fruits, vegetables and crops you should use insecticides and pesticides. Some of the good and highly recommended ones include Permethrin. You should use Permethrin to treat your plants ad this should kill them off. Permethrin is very effective and it will work on almost any pest, those both living on the plant and those living around the plant. It will also keep new pests and stink bugs away. Permethrin has a very strong smell and it mixes with other substances and materials so you are able to get great and more plant coverage and residual coverage as well. Permethrin treatment usually lasts for about 2 to 4 weeks and can be sprayed into the plants.

General Insect Repellent

Article by Owen Jones

The difficulty with all-purpose insect repellent is that no one insect repellent will repel all insects. There are so many different type of insects that nothing will deter them all. Some insects in some regions for instance have been particularly targeted, like bed bugs in New York, and so they have built up a tolerance to repellents that does not exist elsewhere.

This is not such a problem if you know the region where you are staying, because you will know the most prevalent insect pests in your area, but what about when you go on holiday? You might take a box of your favourite mosquito ointment to Acapulco on your dream vacation only to find that there are no mosquitoes there but that the sand flies are murderous.

Mosquitoes are not actually difficult in Scotland, but midges are in the summer and mosquito repellent does not have an effect on midges (or sand flies) even though they get up to the same sort of monkey business. The key is local knowledge. Before you go anywhere endeavour to do some research on local nuisance insects.

In fact, unless you are sure that your favourite mosquito repellent works where you are going, there is not much point taking it with you, because the locals will already have the best repellents for their own particular local problem insects. The only possible exception is a balm with a high percentage of DEET.

It might be illegal where you are going to sell a lotion containing more than 25% DEET, but you feel safer with 50%. I know that I would feel far less at risk with 50% DEET, if I were going to Gambia, where the world’s most deadly mosquitoes lives.

Another pesticide that kills pretty much all insects (except bed bugs) is permethrin, but you may not be able to get it where you are going. The difference between DEET and permethrin is that DEET deters mosquitoes by confusing their senses – basically, you slip under their RADAR – but permethrin kills insects.

This confusion works for lots of insects that perceive their prey by carbon dioxide emissions like ticks and possibly bed bugs. Permethryn is not so effective against bed bugs because they have a waxy coat which does not permit the chemical to actually get to their skin, where it would kill them.

This waxy coat can be removed, but you will not have time when on vacation to do it. The overall best answer to most, but not all insect pests is putting DEET at about 25-35% on your skin, which will give you five to eight hours protection and spaying permethrin on your clothes. Permethrin can last up to six months and can survive several washes.

If you are sitting outside it is a good tactic to hang up a bug zapper – the kind that has an ultraviolet lamp inside a highly charged electric grill. A handheld racquet style bug zapper is also useful for clearing a tent or bedroom of a couple of mosquitoes or flies before retiring.

The Inner Critic

pulgas
by Duarte Diogo

Article by Dane Fletcher

The Inner Critic is that little demon in your head that compares your 14″ biceps with Mr. Universe’s 22′s. You can’t compete, so why bother? Wrong! Negative thinking creates performance anxiety that shuts down your drive to compete. If you can free yourself of self-doubt you can find the energy to bulk up with the best of them.

Dr. JoAnn Dahlkoetter, author of Your Performance Edge (Pulgas Ridge Press, 2004) says, “Your mind is a thought factory: it produces 50,000 thoughts per day. Where your mind goes your energy follows.” Dahlkoetter believes it is possible to direct your mind so that your thoughts create the reality you desire.

Guy Grundy, Mr. Australia, agrees. “The best method is knowing what you wish to attain. If you don’t know what you want, you go through life as someone who is led, rather than being the leader.” So Grundy sets goals for his top three priorities in life: family, acting, and bodybuilding. “Once you know what you want,” says Grundy, “you can plan for achieving those goals.” When things aren’t going his way, Grundy thinks about what he wants to achieve. He realizes it’s tough to be continuously positive. “We all get kicked down on our ass from time to time, but that doesn’t matter. “All that matters is that we get back up and continue on towards our dreams.”Dahlkoetter is aware of inner demons.

She says, “Within every athlete resides a negative inner voice that is primed to attack and judge you.” This little voice can make you nervous before important events interrupting your focus and keeping you from doing your absolute best.

It is hard to believe that Grundy, world Champion 2001 and the only person to ever hold both national titles for JFBB and NABBA to have negative thoughts. Grundy says, “The first time I competed at the World Championships in Vienna, Austria I felt overwhelmed by the size of the guys I was competing against. My inner critic was on fire.” Grundy took 2nd by one point that day. He knew he could have done better.

To learn how to put the Inner Critic’s voice to rest, Dahlkoetter suggests making a chart with three columns. The first column is for the negative thoughts. Write them down as they arise. In the second column, note the time of day the negative thoughts occur. In the third column write a positive reconstruction. This is your idea to fight that inner demon. For example, you may think, “I’m never going to get bigger, look at those guys.” A positive reconstruction might be, “Wait a second! My journal shows I gained two inches in my chest.I am making progress.” Through this awareness you can stop the cycle of negative thinking and develop a more positive attitude.

Once aware of the Inner Critic and its negative mind set you can develop effective ways to talk back to this inner demon. For example, when the Critic pops its ugly thoughts at you and says, “You can’t win!” you simply say to yourself, “Stop this garbage!” or “Shut up.” Then do something physical such as slapping your hand or punching your thigh. Dahlkoetter says, “The combination of physical movement and verbal expression wakes you up and makes thought interruption more likely breaking the chain of negative thoughts.”

ACE certified trainer, Steve Morris says, “When the Inner Critic torments me I say, ‘I know what you’re trying to do, and you can’t come in.’ It’s almost like being a bouncer at a night club. You don’t need logic. You just need to tell the voice, ‘I know who you are, and I’m not going to argue with you. You don’t get access, period. And I’m throwing you out.”

Another way to disarm the Inner Critic is to think about the price it costs you when you permit it to open its big mouth. Athletes report that when the Inner Critic starts bad mouthing them they don’t push themselves as hard during training, they become defensive with their coaches, or avoid trying new workout routines for fear of doing poorly.

To stop these flows of negative thinking assess the personal cost. Develop a list that shows how the inner demon has affected your training, work, and sex life. Then come up with a catchy phrase the next time that negative guy attacks. When it says, “You’re not good enough,” you come back with, “I’m not listening. You cost me two titles and the hottest babe at Bally’s.”

Now that the Inner Critic is quiet, replace its voice with a positive affirmation of your own self-worth. Dahlkoetter says, “The critic would have you believe that you need to always prove your value in life.” For example, the trophies you acquired and notches on your weight belt. “In reality,” she says, “our true value lies in our existence as human beings.” Just the pleasure obtained from a good workout should prove our self-worth rather than trying to justify that we are stronger or have bigger biceps than the next guy. “This is our self-worth, our humanness.”

So get back out there and pump iron next to Mr. Universe. And if that Inner Critic opens its mouth, tell it to “SHUSH!” You’re too busy improving yourself to listen to such nonsense.
