Ammonium chloride,an inorganic compound with the formula NH4Cl, is a white, crystalline solid with a number of uses. It occurs naturally in most volcanic regions, and it can be produced synthetically in an efficient manner. The mineral is especially common on burning coal dumps (formed by condensation of coal-derived gases), but also on some volcanoes and liquorice. It is the product from the reaction of hydrochloric acid and ammonia.

Ammonium chloride used to be known by its historical name, sal ammoniac or salmiac. The manufacturing of sal ammoniac, the earliest known salt of ammonia, began in Egypt and Europe in about the 13th century. Mount Vesuvius in Italy is one of the most notable volcanic locations where ammonium chloride is formed naturally.

Medical UsesAs a common ingredient in many cough medications, ammonium chloride is considered a safe, effective treatment and remedy for coughs. Symptoms of an overdose chloride include nausea, vomiting, thirst, headache, hyperventilation and progressive drowsiness. If a large overdose has been taken, a physician should be consulted immediately.

The primary use of ammonium chloride in the medical field is as an expectorant. An expectorant is a drug that stimulates, depresses or modifies the secretion from the bronchial or laryngeal mucus membranes and promotes its expulsion. This simply means that expectorants are used to stimulate the production of phlegm and ultimately cause the phlegm to be coughed up.

Another medical use of ammonium chloride is as a dietary supplement. It is used to help maintain proper pH levels and correct any situation where the blood contains too much alkaline or too much chloride.

Agricultural UsesAmmonium chloride is a combination of two necessary elements for plant growth — nitrogen and chlorine. Both are naturally occurring in the atmosphere and soil, and providing the plants with an extra source helps them reach peak growth and health. When they are deficient, the plant wilts easily, and the leaves turn yellow and brown. Growth is also stunted.

The compound increased crop yields by up to 40 percent over crops with no chloride added. It is also being studied for disease prevention. Tomatoes, beans and peppers were purposefully inoculated with harmful bacteria in an alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride solution by Dr. Kayimbi Tubajika in 2009.

Uses of Ammonium Nitrate

ammonium

Article by William Thomas

Ammonium nitrate is a very popular chemical that has a variety of applications throughout the world. Uses of this salt include in fertilizer, in explosives, and in making instant cold packs. Chemically, this salt is the nitrate of ammonia and at room temperature appears as a solid white substance, in similar appearance to salt. It is an oxidizing agent so it is very explosive when combined with other chemicals, but on its own it is stable at room temperature.USE IN ANFOANFO is one of the most explosive compounds that can be created, and ammonium nitrate is the main ingredient inside of it. ANFO is a very common explosive that is commonly used in mining, destruction projects, and civil construction. It is created by combining ammonium nitrate with a common carbon source, such as oil, sugar, or even molasses.ANFO accounts for roughly eighty percent of all blasts that occur in the United States on an annual basis. It is very explosive and should be handled with care, and it can only be obtained by companies and people that have obtained the proper license to purchase and use it.FERTILIZERAmmonium nitrate is one of the main ingredients inside high nitrogen fertilizers. It has been theorized that approximately half of all people throughout the world currently rely on ammonium nitrate fertilizer to get the food that they eat every day. That’s because food grown from fertilizer is usually healthier and produces more food than food grown from the ground alone. There are some groups that say fertilizer is poisonous and they advocate for natural fertilizer instead, such as cow manure. However, there has been extensive testing and studies conducted that show fertilizer derived from ammonium nitrate is no more poisonous than fertilizer derived from cow manure.INSTANT COLD PACKSOne of the final uses of the salt mentioned above is in the creation of instant cold packs. Instant cold packs are used to quickly numb an area because of pain or to stop the process of swelling on an injury. They are almost always created by having water in one part of the pack and ammonium nitrate in another part. When the two parts of the pack are crushed and combined together, this salt is allowed to seep into the water supply. This causes an endothermic reaction which sucks all of the heat out of the surrounding area and makes the pack cold. You can check Ammonium Nitrate Fertilizer Manufacturers here.
